Victoria has the honour of again hosting the Tom Quilty event in 2023.  Victorian Quilties have always been very popular and have attracted good fields.  We’ve had some wonderful Quilties in the past put on by a great band of people who have showcased our countryside and our friendly approach.  VERA are looking for a dedicated band of folk who will be willing to put in a lot of hard yards to run this prestigious event and make our state proud once again.

Because of the size of the event it does take a long time to get everything prepared so the SMC would like to give everyone plenty of time to consider running this event.  We have in place the following to help get you started:

  • Seed funding of approximately $17,000 (please note that this amount, and anything additional to assist the next Quilty committee, must be returned to VERA at the end of the event)
  • An already constituted Tom Quilty Association
  • A bank account

The Victorian Tom Quilty Committee is a sub-committee of VERA and will include a VERA representative on the Quilty Committee to ensure a good communication between the two Associations.

The SMC would like to invite anyone who is interested in running the Tom Quilty event in 2023 to submit an expression of interest by 1 September 2021.  This expression of interest should detail the following:

  • Date the event would be run which will be dependent on the best conditions for the proposed venue and which suits the Tom Quilty workforce
  • Details of the venue and infrastructure available – buildings available and what would need to be bought in to service the Quilty family and spectators
  • Detailed description of the track and structure of the ride
  • Ability to hold the State Championships the year prior to the Tom Quilty event which will test out the preparations for the event and allow for any fine tuning
  • Ride personnel including Head Vet, Assistant Head Vet (usually the Head Vet from the next Tom Quilty event), Head Chief Steward, Assistant Head Chief Steward, Treatment Vet, etc.
  • Committee members, the roles they will hold and their experience
  • Facilities available including shops, banking, equine treatment centre, hospitals, etc.
  • Any other relevant information to assist the SMC in assessing the EOI
  • Draft budget
  • Provide photos of the venue and parts of the track

We have a wealth of experience in Quilties within our state – previous Quilty Committee members, Chief Stewards who have worked at Quilties, riders, data entry personnel, etc. to call on if you have any questions.

If you are interested in submitting an expression of interest and have any questions please let me know and I’ll get responses to you as soon as possible.  If you wish to submit an expression of interest please forward to our Secretary, Mezcal Manners, by 31 July 2021.
